Why are we behind the Europeans?

Short answer: because their governments actually serve the people whereas ours only exists now to serve the corporate interests, like the Googles, etc. The telecoms like AT&T.

Also: the amount of older people in gov't positions of power who have little understanding of tech or the Internet is staggering. I'd say everybody up through Gen X either grew up with it or has spent more than enough time assimilating, whereas the older people in Congress are probably still trying to figure out what email is.

It's not just horrifying from a privacy issue for citizens, but from a national cyber-defense perspective where we are HUGELY vulnerable. Especially SCADA systems.

You know, you raise a great point.

When it was revealed that the NSA was basically doing warrantless searches of anybody they wanted in America, apparently this was met with a collective yawn.

Think of if, either now or a couple of decades ago, it came out that the gov't was opening all our mail. That would have been Earth-shaking, the response.

I'm not sure what the difference is.
