It is a pretty common misconception that the military is composed mostly of poor people, or people from the lower classes. In fact, as would be expected for a national institution, the middle class is fairly dominant.

On the other hand, I think it is true that having the draft decreases the willingness of people to go to war, because it'll be their sons and daughters that go off to get killed.
Someone convince me one way or another.
