Possession in that game was Ghana 58%, USA 42%. The US could have kept the ball better when they had the ball, passing wasn't great. That being said, the US really didn't have a need to attack after the first goal went in, with altidore off the pitch there wasn't too much you could do, you can't send the midfield forward though because you'll stretch too much allowing Ghana to exploit the gap between your midfield and defence. Johansson didn't offer the speed or strength to operate as a lone striker, so given the players you had, you had to try and protect your lead at all costs. Ghana were poor attacking wise and I think klinsmann will have recognised that.
