maybe de jure you "own" part of the means of production but if you have no say in the use of an object you don't really own it, do you?

Well, if it were a fair system wealth wouldn't be concentrating into fewer and fewer hands the way it is now. That's all there is to that.
Sure, you can start a mom and pop store and maybe survive for a while. But Walmart is still going to stomp you into a mud hole when they come to town.
That is because they have cornered that market. No one can compete with them, especially individuals.
