It's actually a pretty interesting thought. Some very plausible scenarios are as follows:
1. When you die, the universe ceases to exit.
2. We're all in a computer simulation, and we're not really "alive"
3. Even are thoughts are simulated to be real, and we think that we are thinking, we aren't actually "conscious". And it may be that animals are conscious as well, just to a lesser degree.
4. The real "us" is already dead/dying and the brain is able to reconstruct reality by slowing down time and recreating a life that we may have or thought we could have lived.
5. Every thinking being is a multi-verse unto itself.
I'm not endorsing any of these, put I kinda like thinking about them.
