My wife and I can pay all our bills with under $2000 per month. That includes a new car, a mortgage, groceries, cell phones, internet, etc. If a person makes $50k a year where I live, they could easily sustain themselves and a small family. It wouldn't be middle class but they'd be able to set aside money and live a fairly eventful life.
It all depends on location, as others have pointed out. Making $50k a year in Toronto and that's it makes you pretty poor, with no chance of a house or a car or what not.
