And new Yorkw cost of living is twice as high as the national average, meaning 40k is poverty here, 30k is deep poverty. 23k is for the 48 contiguous states. It's the actual poverty line in Akron or something. In NYC, or any other major us city, 30k is near poverty.
Not to mention you are paying almost no taxes, and saving nothing for retirement. You will mooch off the taxpayer for your retirement and healthcare. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if that qualifies you for food stamps in some states. Now I'm sorry, but living (arguably) in poverty, and relying on the government for healthcare and retirement, is anything but acceptable or middle class.
