Well, experience certainly makes a difference in supervisor/manager roles. You can't necessarily assume management roles on the fly, so it does help having experience managing people.

I've found that 10 years is a major break point in my profession where leaders start really arising. That said, typically the more experience in my profession the better. I'm currently trying to find a senior designer in the 10-15 year range and they're pretty hard to find (I'll have to go headhunting). Typically, I'm not going to be interested in a person with 15 years who's currently on the street. At that point in their career, they're probably on the street for a reason.

Also, always be wary of someone who's got about 10 years of experience at more than 5 firms. I'm cool if someone hopped a bit to find the right place, but when they can't park it somewhere for a few years stretch then I'm not interested.

NAB I'm referring to communication as a facilitator for success. Obviously your profession and countless others require other specific skill baselines that are quite high. I took this thread to be a discussion of common threads specifically.
