Iran moves to ban women from various majors

A policy delightfully reminiscent of Stalin. In a country that tries to present itself as progressive (yes, despite the 'there are no gays in Iran' it loves to try and point itself as a bastion of civil liberties, check press-tv out) its always hilarious when the mullah's clearly intervene in policy. The whole 'wimms in university' thing originally goes back to the shah, so I doubt there fans in general.

What interests me though, is given that there are women in iranian politics (infact about 8% of the parliament there was even a minister a little while ago, though when you consider that women are about 50% of the population hmmm) how long it takes them to go after them.

Though on this case especially, considering the students of iran are probably the biggest group who arn't exactly over the moon about the government, going to be interesting if this kicks up unrest again.

Iran is about to experience some painful demographic decline. As the article indicates, this is a desperate attempt to distance the country from "Western progress" and try to produce a new generation of workers. Iran's workforce is mostly underemployed and in their 20s-30s.

The decline in birthrate and marriages has quite a lot to do with them having huge numbers of their young men killed when they fought Iraq 25 years ago, it's the same demographic pain that France felt after the Napoleonic wars.

Declining birthrates are probably a good thing in the modern world but I suppose it is a bit of a problem if you don't want women in education or working and also want a large army.

Are iranian universities public? If not its going to be funny when they start closing because the majority of their income base, women, is no longer attending. Also the number of iranian women with degrees in the same fields is going to have a hilarious effect on employment prospects, something already strained to the breaking point.
