that's certainly significant as that's the first person to contract ebola in the western hemisphere. hopefully they are right that the nurse only had any contact with one person while symptomatic, and too bad they're completely dry on that zmapp stuff.

of course, she lives in an apartment complex. and she was exposed to duncan during his second visit. you know, the one where he for sure had ebola. she should have had a hazmat suit on

She did have a full suit of protective gear, according to the news so far. I wouldn't doubt she handled something incorrectly and that's how she got it. Now, there is a possible threat that this could be transferred by another means that we haven't figured out.

and the response to the whole thing has been exceedingly minimal, for this entire year. and by time anyone realized it was out of control (other than drudge, who has been fear mongering this shit all year, and apparently wasn't entirely out of line to do so...) it had gotten to the point where we now have it transmitting from one person to another in the us.

ive had trouble determining whether or not cold weather actually kills or sustains the ebola virus. there's conflicting information and most of the time google gives me stuff how "ebola is not spread like the common cold". because it has evolved to be in fruit bats i assume it would be most at home in very warm conditions

the common cold has nothing to do with cold weather, name not withstanding. And humans have a body temperature of 98.6 which is a very warm condition.

ebola virus isn't floating around in the air, its in the bodies of certain animals. Sure it can live in some bats without killing them, but that doesn't matter in a crowded city. the 48 hour period before symptoms appear is long enough for thousands to become infected, which in turn could effect thousands more. once that vector is established it could get dicey

once extreme measures start to be taken to curb the spread of the disease people will start hiding the fact that they are infected to maintain their freedom of movement, infecting more.

this isn't good, they should have done something more than downplay the danger and let untrained or poorly trained/overworked staff deal with it

A lot of us here have taken anatomy and are pretty knowledgeable in basic human abilities to get diseases. I don't think there's really any way we can stop this regardless of training or experienced individuals. For all we know, this nurse went to starbucks one morning a week ago or so, handing the cash register operator her card.

We need to ban flights from African nations struck with the disease. Stop it from going global.
