The issue being that most Western religious people don't actually follow their religion. In fact they've worked hard to avoid having to obey what their religion really says, because they understand that it is highly immoral and tremendously violent. The Catholic Church is probably the best example of that - literally centuries of twisted interpretations in order to make the Bible not seem as awful as it is.
In fact, I would argue that the best Christian is one who doesn't know anything about Christianity other than that Jesus is his homeboy.
I would include some atheistic ideologies in the category of religious thinking, by the way. Marxism is the best example of that - it has all the elements of religious thinking but one, which is belief in a God.
