fair enough
in my youth i was subjected to as a punishment going to church with my mother to make me right or something. with the power of jesus of course. at this time in my life regardless i was rejecting catholicism (i was forced to take the confirmation class... it culminated, before the actual confirmation, with writing reasons why we want to get confirmed in a letter to the bishop. my father made me write reasons why i would not. after that he never brought up the subject again though.) and my mother also was rejecting it but for very different reasons. she went to calgary baptist church instead.
and i'd go to this church and it took like 5 hours out of my sunday. it was horrible punishment. they indoctrinated the children with videos against evolution, pictures of fork, spoons, and sporks being the missing link HARDY HAR HAR. and when i talked to the preacher about it, because i told him that they were damaging the children's minds, he said he would prove to me evolution wasn't real, and pointed to the bible. i said that's great pastor, can you point to anything other than the bible for that? you can use anything else. he just kept on pointing to the bible. after that conversation, probably because i pissed off the pastor, i didn't have to go to that horrible place either.
but the point of this cool story was that i am agreeing with you ex and i see your point, to an extent. i think if they use holy writings or whatever to justify why they think something is wrong, then it's just malum prohibitum and i see your point. they are jsut using some document and saying it is what it is, because the document says so and never questioning the validity of the document
