most hilarious thing about the whole muslim anti-iconography is that the purpose of not having pictures of the prophet is to prevent idolatry. this is clearly quite the opposite and are in effect idolizing the prophet by demanding no one make fun of him

also -- in iran you can find pictures of mohammed. the quaran condemns idolatry, that's it. rules may have sprung up around that getting rid of any pictures of humans (see for example the desecrated hagia sophia, or how the taliban banned photography) or specifically the prohpet but shia muslims don't agree

well, our culture has ancient religious proscriptions banning "graven images" as well.

Kind of sad to see how an irrational and meaningless belief can have such tragic consequences

that may be the case, but it's one of the ten commandments so its as fundamental a religious belief in western culture as it is in middle eastern culture

probably a vestigial relic from prehistoric beliefs

so no, its not about worshiping golden calves at all, it about capturing the images

so, like I said relic of cultural belief in sympathetic magic left over from prehistoric times, that is still found in more than one culture, ours included
