Bill Maher, who I really like actually, makes a completely different point. He is staunchly against all religion. That position I can understand, because personally at the end of the day they are all fairy tales to me. But to try to distinguish one fair tale from another, based on the actions of the people who choose to believe in it, is just absurd. All religions, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, have violent and vengeful gods who demand a number of backwards behaviors. The fact that the backwardness of certain societies is justified using one religion and not the other, means nothing and is a coincidence of history. Again, go to any different time period and the jews or christians were acting just as crazy, indicating that these sort of wild behaviors have nothing to do with the underlying religions themselves and everything to do with the state and development of the societies where they are practiced.
