special missions are forms of ground combat. As an example, when we invaded Iraq, airborne troops and special forces were seizing airfields behind enemy lines while the army was rolling to Baghdad. the marines are good guys, but they really aren't anything special.
And yeah they have their "special forces" after they cried to SOCOM until they got one. And the air force pararescue is top-notch.

No I don't dislike Marines, I just don't think they are necessary.
The whole "tip of the spear" thing with the marines is really, really overblown. I am annoyed that they get a lot of the popularity and "glory", when they seriously don't do anything better or more than the regular army infantry.
I have friends that are marines, and friends that were in the army, and friends in the air force.
