Yeah, I see your point. To run a nationwide campaign, you'd have to win the people who have money to finance your campaign first.
But, with the absence of party primaries (the GOP isn't going to spring for spending millions upon millions to hold a nationwide party vote), think how nice it would be to have 5-6 "Republican" candidates on the ballot, 5-6 "Democrat" candidates on there, and 10-15 other parties.
We know that half the electorate doesn't vote by name, but by letter (OK, I totally made that stat up, but I'm sure it's a high percentage).
