My daughter's MacBook is a Mid 2007 model. How many eight-year-old Dells, HPs or Gateways are still running without any hardware updates? She's running OS X Lion and Windows 8. My MacBook Pro is a Mid 2009, it is running OS X Yosemite and Windows 8. No hardware updates since it was manufactured. Neither laptop has had any issues with hinges becoming weak. No broken plastic (mine is metal). They are quality equipment.
I've got Mac Pros and Mac Minis here in the house that are several years old and have no issues. They just work.

I'm not trying to win a price argument, the products are more expensive. What I am saying is that they aren't overpriced.
At this point having 8 GB of ram is plenty. My MacBook air that's 3.5 years old and has 4 GB of ram and has 0 problems, and I still get 5-6 hours of battery life. Most of the budget (hey the same specs) laptops crap out much sooner with performance. Of course this is just my experience.
