It wouldn't take anything on the level the tech presented in Neuromancer (awesome book btw). A crude workable prototype could probably be put together using what we have now. Just monitoring equipment and a transmitter are needed.
Yeah, I know what you mean about the flying cars. I grew up in the 70s and really thought we would have flying cars by the year 2000 the whole time I was growing up. So that didn't happen, but what did happen was equally amazing. Because we are so immersed in technological advancement it is normal for us to see rapid change now. If someone would have told me about everything that was really going to happen back in 1976 I wouldn't have believed them.
Society has totally changed. We accept readily stuff like styles, cliques, music etc that people simply wouldn't have accepted back then. Stuff that was really edgy in the 70s and 80s is packaged for toddlers and pre-teens now. Communications have advanced so much it boggles the mind when you first realize the extent of it.
So the changes will be profound, probably just not a lot like we think they will be. Yeah, I'm probably totally wrong about the future, but it wouldn't be the first time. I used to watch the Jetson's when I was a kid and I thought something like that would be the reality by now. The thing is we could make a flying car if we wanted to. It would just be stupid.
