Martin did live in this world while writing it, so it wasn't created in a vacuum.
Also, George is, evidentially, a huge Dead fan and there are a lot of references in his books. Maybe that's the history snoop refers to.....

Speaking of GoT, I started rereading Dance with Dragons a while back because I didn't have a new book to read and its really interesting how I'm at the part that is paralleling this part of the show, almost in synch, in fact. Interesting part is how some characters are just being tossed or combined with other characters. Jorah Mormont merging with Griff and Varys merging with Illyrio being two of the most obvious. Due to Martins lack of finishing the novels, I wonder if the creators will just have to create their own alternate ending, or if Martin is feeding them some info but wanting them to diverge on their own.
