i was reading about a study that looked at the results of "Everyone is a winner" and it doesn't create entitlement or over sensitivity what it does is breed mistrust and the inability to accept people are telling you the truth. children know when they didn't do well enough. giving them a trophy for it, they know they're being lied to.
how this manifests is, say, a choral teacher compliments a student for their work. the student won't accept the compliment, thinking that there's some hidden motive behind it. an attempt to cover up something that was wrong. and the people who studied this found that youngsters wouldn't accept praise or compliments until someone told them something negative about what they'd done, because only then would they think it was genuine.
and that, dear children, is f**k.
