True Detective Season 2

So I just watched the first episode...

Was it me or do there appear to be few redeeming qualities about any of the characters in this season? Yes, obviously there were problems with the last season's protagonists but at least it felt like they were good at what they did. These characters are reckless on the job, late, etc.

Just wasn't too impressed with this episode, it's like they're trying too hard to humanize the characters through failure or immorality - it feels contrived to me.

Other thoughts?

Its flat. They are trying so hard to be *dark and gritty* that, yes, contrived is the best word. The worst part is that they had to use such a fantastic cast to make such a bunch of shitty, miserable characters. Pure misery, all the time, all around. And the dialogue wasn't even believable.

I think we're all a little tired of anti-heroes. Troubled protagonists. Blah blah. Its just coming off as self importance.

I'd watched the premier of Mr Robot immediately beforehand...and man what a gnarly contrast.

I have to rewatch it. I fell asleep half way through.

The first season was rife with stilted, unnatural dialogue and overwrought scenes. It was a mediocre show at best. I think this season will probably be the same but I'll give it a shot.

Pretty underwhelmed myself. That scene with Vince and Collin in the bar made me want to yell "get on with it already, enough f**k brooding set up shots". The saddest song and singer in the world as a background soundtrack didn't help matters.

I read somewhere that TD is like Skynet, it has become self aware, which seems apparent in the first episode. I'll stick with it and hope this was merely the setup to something better.

The first season didn't get rolling until about 3 episodes in, so I'll wait and see on this season. I don't necessarily think every character is an anti-hero as Colin Farrell is def 100% a bad guy and corrupt. Having 3 leads with equally depressing backgrounds can be a bit redundant though, they def should let at least one of them have a normal social life and not be f**k up.

I thought the first season was strong most of the way through. It wasn't great, but it was pretty solid. That whole "No! NO! NOOOOO!!" screaming thing when shown the tape was one of the cheesiest things in recent memory...but still...it started pretty strong and stayed that way.

I don't know much about Dylan's opinions on other shows to know if I should even dignify his analysis with a response. Dylan what's your jam? If you otherwise have good taste id like to hear more about why you didn't like True Detective.
