In response to Spider's point about definitions (and I know you said you already have the definitions provided by the district) I think you might want to briefly do the kids a favor by giving a little practical context about these definitions as well. This might not help them learn the content in the text, but I think it's a great disservice to just teach kids, for example, that socialism is a system in which the means of production are collectively owned and leave it at that. Even if a high school student is smart enough to get his head around this concept (and most aren't), it's not a practical explanation for socialism in the context of our society. Just like so many kids are taught that we have capitalism in America, and then get confused as f**k when someone eventually tells them we have a lot of socialized elements of our economy. It would really benefit them to understand that we have a hybrid system that includes both capitalist and socialist elements before they either grow up thinking that we're strictly capitalist like so many in this country believe.

Yet as much as people complain about calling it the "Democrat" party, no one can explain what is so horrifically uncivil about forgetting the "ic" at the end. Far as I can tell, Chris Matthews started this temper tantrum years ago when someone on his show said "Democrat Party" and he flipped out, claiming the phrase "Democrat Party" was intentionally derogatory and disrespectful. Since then I think trolly cons in the media have run with it just to prod guys like Matthews.

It's really no harm no foul.

it stems from the idea that they aren't democratic. also it's just petty name calling to constantly and consciously refer to your opponents by the wrong name. also it's f**k stupid and lowers the quality of discourse in this country which is something we can barely afford.
