the problem is that "democratic" is an adjective, "Democrat" is the noun. "republican" on the other hand is a noun or adjective. the Democratic Party is full of democrats; it's the democrat party. these democrats are fine with the word "democrat" to describe an individual who is a member of the democratic party, so, I agree with Philly, it's now just used to troll people about nothing

If you're in a low income area try to make analogies that make sense to them given their day to day. Incorporate things like "slinging, gambling, 5-0, etc." When talking about insider trading utilize stuff like the terry stop and then go over how the ramifications of white collar are far less punitive than those for slinging - perhaps you can show some the light. When talking about taking bets on fights, playing cards, etc explain to them the intricacies of shorting a stock or simply buying in equities. Easily enough with slinging you can simply show them the movie "the wolf of wall street" and explain how penny stocks work and how to get one over on the dumbs.

The trick isn't to follow the curriculum, it's to briefly touch upon the required material and then give an example that would be infinitely more interesting as well as relevant to your pupils. They will only ever show interest in the academic minutae of a given topic if interest can be harnessed beforehand. They need to see the forest, not just the trees.
