When you're talking about an organism that inputs and outputs energy, obviously the biggest thing is the input-output ratio. So if you take in 3000 calories, but burn 1000 calories, your ratio is 3:1. Losing weight requires a negative ratio, which is best achieved through exercise rather than starvation. The type of food you eat has a miniscule impact on weight gain, although it can definitely have an impact on other areas of your health.
Do yourself a favour and never listen to anything that Saz says about anything other than shoes or types of cocktails.
