frankly it's the word addiction. it's more like they are inclined to do it because they like it, and perhaps have some compulsions about it, but they are not addicted. addicts necessarily need physical addiction. unless someone goes through withdrawl symptoms when they don't have X they were never addicted to X

What counts as withdraw symptoms though? Someone who feels psychologically dependent on alcohol is going to have some withdraw symptoms, of sorts. Anxiety for one.

The entire purpose of this distinction simple seems to morally downgrade it. Which to be blunt about it is probably predicated on some rather silly views about free will. Sorry but its all brain chemistry at the end of the day, whether its an internal stimulus like or an external stimulus hardly matters really. Responsibility is there all the same, some people are just broken frankly.

There are certainly OCD and other psychological addictions, e.g. hoarding that can be more severe and at least as deadly as various chemical dependencies additions e.g. nicotine.

Its why generally, when talking of 'addictions' the term now is 'chemical dependency', whereas addiction now covers both chemical dependency and psychological addiction.
