One thing a couple of theaters have started doing is requiring you to select a seat when you buy the ticket. Annoying as hell. Let me just walk in, take a look, and pick a likely spot, rather than be stuck with everyone else trying to cluster in middle-center.
As others have noted...theaters need to start finding ways to compete with your living room. What's really nice are the theaters set up like bars, where you get beer and food and a waitress with your movie, and the noisy kids aren't allowed. Usually its second or third run movies, but that's ok. Comfortable seating, less institutional atmosphere, less crowded, better way to kill a couple hours than being jammed in between sweaty people who definitely wouldn't fit in an airline seat.
At least provide a little more elbow room and some minor degree of recliner-ness.
