Huge regional differences in basic manners. Just generally going from West Coast to East Coast...really surprising the first time to see how loud, rude, and impatient people seem to be. I guess we're really just a lot more laid back over here. In the South there is a noticeably increase in Sir's and Ma'am's, and in the Midwest people seem a bit friendlier than the average. I found Boston a lot ruder than NY, but I was there for less than a week in both cases.

Takes an outside perspective. You're in the belly of the beast, Com. No objectivity.
Its a pretty common observation. Not just a stereotype. Its not a gigantic difference, but its noticeable...probably something to do with the increased rush that comes from a far higher population density.
