I find myself asking: what was accomplished here? Even if you were the most reactionary, "law & order" type guy, what good came out of this?

OK let me put it this way: what exactly was their motivation for pursuing something that pretty much everybody felt was absurd? Not just to start it, but to finish it?
I'm just trying to get at the real motive here, not that we'll ever know it.

That's another part that I don't understand completely--what probable cause did they have to go into his cell phone?

Kid probably consented. It's pretty absurd how often people consent to searches when there is no reason for them to do so.
