By and large, the American electorate is not particularly sophisticated. It's helpful to play to the lowest common denominator because that's what wins elections.

True, but wouldn't you agree that the "lowest" has gotten ever lower in recent years? I seem to remember Bush 1 talking about "1000 Points of Light," Reagan talking up America's greatness (not like that scold Carter) and Clinton playing "Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow."
While the "Southern Strategy" has been around for decades, I don't remember all these promises being contingent on transparently scapegoating blacks, Mexicans, gays and, well, just about everybody who wasn't a white Bible-thrower. But now hitched together with consequence-free lying and even wild conspiracy theories that used to be the domain of Sunday night radio programs in small markets.

We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will yet swell the chorus when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.
