also even though it's been repeated all over the internet... this isn't an AIDS drug. taking this drug does absolutely nothing to help combat AIDS. this drug is for toxoplasmosis.

googling, there are two big groups that are negatively impacted by toxoplasmosis. well, and possibly a third.

the first biggest is pregnant women giving it to unborn children. that's almost all cases. this drug is used if the child gets it which apprently is like 200,000 cases a year, but it's hard to find exact data

the second is immo-suppressed individuals, such as AIDS patients. adult cases are about 20,000 cases a year.

finally, toxoplasmosis makes mice seek out cat urine (and thus, their death). this is because the parasite reproduces in cats. there's evidence to suggest that crazy cat ladies are impacted by the presence of the parasite, which they get from feces. roughly 30% of americans have this in their system and are "not impacted" but perhaps they are

as for the topic... the FDA grants these patents because they want to encourage drug manufacturers to create "orphan drugs" to make sure they can have extended amount of time to regain the costs of development of that drug. i don't like the FDA at all, but if we are to have one, I think the government ought look at enacting price caps if they want to apply for orphan drug status. meaning, they don't have to, but if they want exclusivity, they need to abide by certain rules. also, this guy is a giant douchebag

When the state acts only in the interests of things like big pharma or Wall St. because they've been bought off, big pharma or Wall St. are still the villains.

Yeah, the state is complicit for accepting--let's call this what it is--bribes, but the solution isn't to declare the state is the problem. Corruption is the problem.
