In this context, "define" would mean provide the meaning of what you intended when you say a life would or would not "matter". Surprised I had to define "define" since it's fairly self-explanatory whereas whether a life "matters" is much more esoteric (hence my curiosity at your meaning).

What do you mean "of consequence"? On a long enough time frame nothing we do has any consequence whatsoever.
