also if you get a big enough fire going the sides of the quarry will reflect the heat back potentially turning it into a big ole' oven.

as to the walking dead world death toll....I imagine far larger numbers of people would die that first winter due to starvation, exposure, illness, and fighting other living people than would be killed by zombies.
