That wasn't the point. The point is that they were supposed to be executed--for something they didn't do.
The fact that they just ended up--just--spending decades in prison is an even further insult. In Cruz's case he managed to have at least a good chunk of his life left to live. In the original story, no.
Either way, the fact still stands--we have endless cases of people sentenced to death who turned out to be innocent. Until that problem is addressed, the death penalty needs to be suspended. Otherwise we are saying that it's acceptable to us to kill innocent people to get the guilty ones.
How is that morally defensible?
