Seeing as how we are talking about lethal weapons that are involved in tens of thousands of deaths each year, you making that distinction and then coming down on the wrong side of it... That's the problem. Long guns don't need anymore additional legislation, what needs to change is the mentality that views ownership as a right.
Gun ownership should not be viewed as a right, but a privilege, depending on your mental state, your criminal past and your ability to demonstrate firearm safety. It also should require strict storage and access laws, with severe criminal penalties for those who are careless with their guns, especially around children.
