Spider I don't think it's that cut and dry. In fact, the Constitution also refers to calling forth "the Militia of the several States". Sounds much more like a reference to a body organized by the states, no?

The constitution also refers to calling up the militia. Can armed citizens just be arbitrarily called up by the federal government? Might be a reference to a draft, except the US didn't have a "draft" in the sense that individuals could get picked up for military service. They did have a concept of - wait for it - militias that would be trained and then that milita could be called up in times of war fairly recently after signing of the doc.

It's almost like the Second Amendment's "well regulated milita" referred to, well, a militia.

To be fair, and with respect to Ex's nationalist clucking, the last 20 years have been extremely good news for Canada in economic terms. Finally realizing that they couldn't prop up the excessive social spending without being tax competitive (especially with their southern neighbors) in an effort to fund it...they heavily reformed spending and taxation, and business (and common Canadians) have been flourishing as a consequence. More recently, they've benefited extremely from far higher valued energy exports, as low population, high resource, northern economies tend to do. There has been a lot of prudent policy put into effect up there, and we really should take notice.
