Speaker is not a good stepping stone to the presidency. By taking the job he has resigned to the fact that he will never be president.

My guess is (and admittedly this is a bit naive) he wants to be the guy who fixed a broken institution. That's why he made those demands of the caucus. Funny that he only got 200 votes today, which means the loons all voted against him anyway.
