The Middle East was given every opportunity to modernize, but they didn't, and based on the polls, it looks like most people don't want it too. How many trillions of dollars came out of the ground? How much of that money was spent on creating a sustainable, non-resource based economy?
Look at Saudi Arabia. Under the protection of the most powerful state in history, with money spilling out of the ground, and after a half-century, the country is still a god awful shithole, with mass executions happening all the time, women forbidden from driving, etc.
Saying Muslims are just like other people is a cute attempt at not dealing with the issues. Of course they are just like other people. The question is why are they literally insane when it comes to collective decision making.
