Its not the content of the prequels that was the worst sin...it was the really lousy production. The LAZY camera work, writing so bad that its frankly still kinda shocking that it saw release. The 90% CGI "sets". Entire characters replaced with CGI ragdolls. Etc etc.
The problem isn't so much the Jar Jar and the infamous "NOOOOOOOO!!!" Its that George Lucas doesn't understand how actual human beings communicate with each other. He doesn't understand his audience, or what they want. And worst of all, he simply didn't care, and despite the entire world shouting their disgust at what he did, he doubled down and made it even worse. Because, ego.
They really were some of the most poorly made movies ever. And not because of the specific choices about things...but because they failed at storytelling. And they failed at presenting that story in an interesting way. They failed at making even a single character memorable (other than Jar Jar...but its hard to forget such visceral disgust. Like smelling your first rotting animal.) or actually interact in a believable way with another character. The whole thing fell flat. Any scifi channel Sharknado movie will have better characters and dialogue.
Remember, there were quite a few positive reviews when the first one came out. A lot of reviewers have since admitted that they were in denial. That they were so caught up in their personal investment in Star Wars, that they convinced themselves that the film wasn't that bad. I was a teenager when I saw it, and I did the same thing...walked out of the theater deflated...but still trying to replay the good bits in my head. Took a while before I finally came to terms with how awful it was.
Then of course came the Red Letter Media reviews. Plinkett took those movies apart in such amazing detail...giving voice to everything we already knew deep down. If you haven't watched that stuff, you should. Its deeply hilarious.
