Insanity is a very severe level of mental illness. Not all mental illness rises to the level of insanity.

Let's say you have a friend that is religious and leads a successful, productive happy life, has a great family and marriage and is not over-the-top with the religion. Not sure how we can call that in any way "mentally ill."
