Today Eagles traded away the following players for draft picks (details on what picks not released yet):
CB Byron Maxwell to Dolphins(signed in 2015 as free agent from Seahawks)
ILB Kiko Alonso to Dolphins(acquired in 2015 trade with Bills for LeSean McCoy)
DeMarco Murray to Titans(signed in 2015 as free agent coming off rushing title with Cowboys)
Maxwell played decently, but not up to his giant contract. Alonso is on his rookie contract still and was highly acclaimed after his rookie year in Buffalo, but struggled coming back from ACL tear. Murray's dropoff from 2014 was horrendous behind an Eagles o-line that was much worse than what he had to work with in Dallas. Like Maxwell, Murray had a lot of guaranteed money left on his deal for 2016.
These trades definitely clear up a lot of cap space. I think there were valid arguments for keeping all of them except Murray, who was my least favorite offseason acquisition last year and proved to be a bit of a locker room cancer. That said, this gives us other opportunities.
I have no idea what the Eagles are going to do with all the cap space they've freed up, but rather than make a bunch of big FA splashes, I'd like to see us bring back Walter Thurmond at safety (say what you want of Chip, but signing Thurmond and moving him from slot corner to safety was a stroke of genius) and if possible, set up the inevitable payday for Fletcher Cox. I wouldn't mind a guard in FA, but we don't need to do too much. This roster has talent on it.
go ahead. keep screaming "Shut The f**k Up " at me. it only makes my opinions Worse
