Its not like RAM is crazy expensive. Well, it is if Apple's selling it. But I can't think of a good reason to not get as much as you can afford.

The best possible thing you can get, if you can work it in, is an SSD. Its the biggest improvement to the PC since discrete graphics. Spinning disks just suck as they age. If you need big storage, get a 2.5 inch external drive and call it good.

Homer - absolutely get the best possible specs you can but I wouldn't worry too much about 4gb of RAM vs 8 so long as you can upgrade it later if you feel you need to update it. Just be aware that if you get an ultrabook, you may not be able to change out the components very easily. Double check the specs and if you aren't sure, just post them here and I'm sure someone can confirm that the hard drive and memory can be updated.

Pretty much any laptop made in the past few years is going to support at least 8gb ram, with the possible exception of netbooks.

(btw, I build, install, upgrade hardware at work on a fairly consistent basis. Just this past week I had to build 2 computers and upgrade 3 laptops)
