Interesting back and forth between Simon Pegg and George Takei over that. And both make good points, I think. I'm siding with Takei though.

I don't have a problem with them "flaunting" a gay character (after all, one would think that by the 23rd century it would be so normative that it would go completely unremarked)...I've got a problem with them reinventing a character that has been established for half a century. And I've got a problem with how it violates the internal logic of the difference between the prime timeline and the JJ-verse timeline. Because this isn't meant to be a reboot, or a re-imagining, it makes no sense to magically transmute the sexual orientation of a central character.
