these same type of people a couple generations ago were against my great grandfather coming here, as he was irish and catholic
whites make up the plurality of latin americans; the number of people with european ancestry in latin america total is around 80%
while i will say there certainly is a racist element, you dismiss 75% of the country as being that way when that's not true. the vast majority of them are not, and they have grievances, and when they feel dismissed they jump ship and vote trump even though they are lifelong democrats. there is a mix of motives, but three fourths of the country is opposed to loosening immigration rules for a variety of reasons, and would lose their shit over it. its why immigration reform never gets through, but it's not because of racism. it's because of an innate human instinct to be drawn to your own, which extends to some extent to all your countrymen. most americans have affinity more for americans than for non-americans, just like people in every country. and they have more affinity for people that speak their language -- as likely most europeans do (especially those that would come here). when people feel like "we have enough problems" it seems like taking more in just adds to it

My life has become a single, ongoing revelation that I haven’t been cynical enough.
