when yellowstone blows almost everyone will be impacted in the entire US. there will be national boo hoos for generations over it.

the problem with rainer is flooding (from the glacier on top of it)... only the flood is full of debris

maybe we should we just go back to europe? or maybe we can heed the advice of the boy scouts and be prepared

houston needs infrastructure repair and expansion to mitigate these types of things. i'm not one for flood insurance by governments, but governments can and should provide common goods like flood walls and whatnot. this will take years.

of course, nature won't wait. Irene is cat 2, expected to strengthen to cat 4, and hit either florida or the carolinas

thats so much worse than i thought the flood insurance program was. i thought the main problem was just encouraging people to live in flood prone areas. i didn't realize that it was paying for yearly renovations for some people

I think it needs some serious reform and that it's applicability in the future needs to be contingent on localized adherence to some set standard that accounts for specific geographic/climate concerns.
