This is the modern conservative. Facts don't matter. It is extremely disconcerting.
Today I was on a Canadian political subreddit. Somebody posted an article about how Canadian attitudes towards immigration are hardening. And they are, there is no doubt about it.
The problem, as I pointed out, is that our birth rate is 1.6 per woman. In order to maintain our current population, it needs to be 2.1.
Now, this is just a fact. It isn't controversial or up for debate. We've know and understood the sub-replacement fertility rate for decades, and we know that it causes economic problems. Less working age people means a smaller tax base. This means less money for services. It also means a shrinking economy, which further exacerbates the tax base.
We have an aging population. They will be using an incredible amount of resources over the next few decades. If we want to be able to pay for these services, we MUST let in between 300 and 350,000 immigrants per year.
This was met with outright denial. It is beyond irrational.
Anyways, the focus shifted to sustainability. These people argued that we need to decrease the global population. I agreed with them. I then pointed out that the number one contraceptive in the world is wealth - the richer a society, the lower the birth rate. Again, this is well understood. We have known this forever. It isn't an opinion. It isn't ideological. It is 100% fact.
No matter. None of this had any impact on opinion. Facts simply don't matter to the modern conservative. All that matters is ideology.
