In June or July of last year, Trump said "all of them have AIDS" when referring to Haitians, and also said that Nigerians would "never go back to their huts" if they saw the US.
These statements are exponentially worse than what was said lately. And yet, without looking up a definitive list of Donald Trump's racists sayings, I had completely forgotten about them.
This is what is going to happen here. In three months, I will have forgotten about this, and will instead be focusing on whatever latest shitty thing that Trump has said. And that is true for the vast bulk of Americans, most of whom, if they felt comfortable enough, would actually agree with the sentiment expressed by Trump - even while understanding it to be a form of racism!
Democrats and Progressives are completely mired in their own worldview. They think this is the kind of thing that will finally push his Presidency over the edge. It is an extreme level of delusion. The end result is that, after one year, they are not any closer to having Trump removed from office.
Donald Trump is shocking, offensive, racist, yes. He was voted into office with everyone fully aware of this. Many of the things he said on the campaign trail were objectively worse than what he has said here. Note that this does not matter to his supporters, and it doesn't matter to most GOP members, and it doesn't even matter to a significant chunk of Democrats (around 25% according to Hurfs numbers).
Go ahead and complain about it. Talk to your friends about it. This is your right, and I don't blame you. But understand that your shock and offense mean precisely jack shit. The bulk of your nation has been shocked and offended since he took office. Unfortunately, this is not grounds for dismissal, and people are starting to tune out, because there is never any long-term focus on any particular thing. It is just a constant barrage of shit.
Meanwhile, as we've been discussing this and his weight and his mental health and his racism and his sexual assaults and his affairs and how mean he is, 60% of career diplomats have resigned under Trump. 60%. These people have relationships and knowledge that take decades to cultivate. Perhaps it would be best to focus on stuff like this? It is a thought anyways.
