Kane's point is that previous administrations have negotiated with NK with no meaningful results.
This represents a change in the status quo. We have no idea how it ends beyond that. We also have a long ways to go before any meeting actually happens and I wouldn't be shocked at all if it never materializes.

Yeah now we're back to where we've been.
The problem with just straight up going is that you're actually giving Kim something for nothing. I'd say this decreases the likelihood of something materializing. Just imagine it - Trump goes to visit. Kim gets a photo shoot with POTUS and then tells Trump to go kick rocks. Looks bad for Trump and the US.
