Anytime a novel runs to 800 pages and is part of a larger work, yes, I consider that a tome. I mean I'm a Neal Stephenson fan, so I'm not saying it in a bad way.
I also picked up 1493, based on the recommendations here, and The Man In The High Castle (which I did not particularly like or dislike). I only really got into sci-fi in the past few years. There were a few authors I liked but I had never read the classics. So I've polished off most of the Ender series, most of Vonnegut, the Dark Tower series, a few from Heinlein, etc. since then.
