McCain was respected as a lawmaker and as a warhero well before Trump came around, so the idea that it was only "never trumpers" and "west wing liberals" is absurd. he was the republican nominee for president. he lost against Obama, a once in a lifetime politician
sure you might have grotesque individuals such as yourself that celebrate hero's deaths but i think in general people respected the man from all walks of life. according the gallup polls he was known by the overwhelming majority of americans for most of his career and well liked during that time for the most part, except when he was running for president against Obama which really was that people saying they like Obama more. he had the 3rd highest favorbility rating of any presidential candidate in the modern era when running for president, behind W and Obama
