Its definitely a longer 'a' in the US, no matter the regional accent, it is just more exaggerated in areas like Texas or the Ghetto. Here in the north of England it is a very short 'a'. Not quite sure how to demonstrate it phonetically via the written word...

Well, there are dozens of distinct accents here, just like anywhere else.
The most common accent has ass rhyming with mass or lass or sass. That extra syllable is more of a southern thing, I think, though it varies between different southern accents. Its an "a" sound as in cat, rather than cot.

I thought being "British" included Scots and Irish, not just English.
